Mitkof Island, the island the City of Petersburg
resides on, has long been a location of significance to our Tlingit
ancestors. Thousands of years ago our people made their trek down the
Stikine River and made settlements along the river and surrounding areas
between present day Wrangell and Petersburg communities. Some of these
areas included Duncan Canal, Rocky Pass, Thomas Bay, Petersburg Creek
and even a recently found site close to the current city of Kupreanof.
Mitkof Island itself hosts dozens of fish traps and one petroglyph that date back well over a thousand years old. This rich history encourages and inspires us still today as we continue to utilize and enjoy the land that our ancestors have left us for our home.
The Petersburg Indian Assocation, the federally recognized Tribal
Government in Petersburg, Alaska, seeks to enhance the quality of life
of our Tribe by providing services such as
education and housing scholarships,
general assistance, energy assistance, rental and utility help, school
activity fees, and providing school supplies to name a few.
Our greatest achievement is to promoting our cultural values so that our
community as a whole can celebrate the richness of our heritage.
