The Petersburg vs. Wrangell Tobacco Prevention and Control Event ended at 5 pm on Friday, January 22nd. Tori Shay, Petersburg Indian Association's Tobacco Prevention and Control Director and Tammi Meissner, Wrangell's SEARHC Health Educator, are happy with the participation during the event. It was neck and neck the whole time!
The final score was PSG: 81 to WRG: 75
Congratulations Petersburg community on winning the competition and great job Wrangell, you almost had us! Ms. Shay and Mrs. Meissner want to thank everyone who participated, they appreciated the fun competition among the towns, and they hope that you learned about e-cigarette advertising during the event!
Each community completed their own drawings.
The winner of the Hydroflasks in Petersburg are: Tina Kerr, Stephanie Silva, Aidan Torrez, Chandler Strickland, and Larissa Lewis.
Be on the lookout for future events where so that Petersburg can remain victorious!
Throughout the event, a guide on how to beat Wrangell hung in our entry way!
The class was sponsored by PIA and the Spruce Root Community Development. PIA received this grant to teach a subsistence skill to Petersburg's Tribal Citizens.
Classes were limited to 6 people to take safety measures due to coronavirus, and to allow one-on-one assistance with canning.
Thank you to the instructors and the participants for making this a success!
Thank you to all the volunteers and staff members who made this program possible: Liam Jackson, Nicole Peterson, Darnell Murray, Tori Shay, Ron Ware, Jack Galaktionoff, Tracy Welch, Maryann Rainey, and Tina Kerr.
The COVID-19 Pandemic has been tough to navigate for both citizens and businesses. At PIA, we strive to ease this time for our Tribal Citizens. We are fortunate to be awarded funding to complete this mission. We have done our best to ensure most bases were covered, and we could offer everything possible. In the past couple of months, we have completed a Utility/Fuel Relief Program, offering $1,000 per Tribal Household to be credited to their utility/fuel accounts, and a Mortgage/Rent Relief Program, offering $1,000 per Tribal Household to be issued towards their shelter costs. Other past programs include a Moorage Program, offering $500 to Alaskan fisherman who have moored a vessel within our Harbor system throughout the pandemic, a Internet Assistance Program, offering $300 to each Tribal Household to assist with internet costs, and a Food Assistance Program, offering multiple distributions of pre-selected boxes of quality food to each Tribal Household.
As always, the Basic Needs Project (non-food household essentials) and the Transit Bus (available to diabled and elderly individuals) are ongoing programs and that has not changed.
If you need a face mask, they are available at PIA for free.
October 2020
Children and families scoured Petersburg in search of 20 painted rocks that contained tobacco prevention messaging or some motivating advice. This was a great way to get active, stay safe, and spread the message that tobacco doesn't rock, but the community of Petersburg sure does!
