Natural Resource Management Career Paths

About the Program

The Natural Resource Management Career Paths Program, also known as PIA Summer Youth Program, is powered by a grant PIA receives to employ Tribal Youth to learn about the different career paths available in the Natural Resource Management field in Petersburg. This is a 6-week paid program where 3 youth and their supervisor will job shadow and volunteer for various organizations in Petersburg for Natural Resource Management career exploration. A couple of examples of activities include but are not limited to:

  • Invasive plants identification and control with the Forest Service
  • Business and Commercial fishery procedures and management with the Marine Advisory Program, local fishermen, PFI, and Icicle Seafoods
  • Fish waste compost education and creation, Clam Surveys, and testing water samples for paralytic shellfish poisoning with the PIA IGAP Department
  • A behind-the-scenes look at local Law enforcement with the Alaska State Troopers and NOAA Archaeology, surveying and fish pass reconstruction with the USFS,
  • and more.
